2023 is the middle chapter of UMass football's independent experiment. A 3-9 year in a conference-less schedule is neither program-crisis nor program-progress; it is a continuation year, and the fanbase registered it as such. The scrappy-proud voice does not require a signature win to hold — but the New Mexico State result gave the chapter a specific data point to quote. The structural question the chapter leaves unasked is the one 2025 would eventually force: whether independence is the right structural choice for a program whose recruiting footprint is the Northeast and whose conference memory is the MAC. 2023 did not answer that question. It registered it, and the program kept writing.
