2020 is the chapter the Big Ten almost didn't play and Ohio State almost won. The Fields broken-ribs game against Clemson is the year's single data point the program will quote — a performance the scheme and the scoreboard both ratified. The Alabama title game was the ceiling-reset; the 2020 Crimson Tide offense was the best Saban team of the Process era, and Ohio State spent the next four years building a defense that could match it. The 2024 title closes that arc; the 2020 chapter is the one that opened it. Compressed-schedule caveats aside, the 2020 team was the Day program's second-best regular season and its first title-game appearance.
