Cotton Bowl, December 29. Missouri 14, Ohio State 3. A ten-point game in a non-CFP bowl; the program's lowest offensive output in five years; the coordinator changes that followed the loss set up the 2024 title run.

2023 is the chapter the Day era rebuilt from. An 11-2 season with a Michigan loss and a Cotton Bowl embarrassment is not a low-ceiling year in raw record — it is a low-ceiling year in the specific program's register. Ohio State's dynastic-industrial voice does not calibrate by regular-season wins; it calibrates by the two games (Michigan, the title game). The 2023 team won neither. The chapter's legacy is the 2024 title that followed: the coordinator changes, the Jeremiah Smith recruitment, the transfer-portal additions (Quinshon Judkins, Will Howard) that defined the title team all traced back to the 2023 offseason.
