Civil War, November 26. Oregon State 34, Oregon 24. The rivalry loss that kept the Ducks from a bowl; the program's third straight November loss; the institutional conclusion that Helfrich's retention was no longer tenable.
November 29. Helfrich fired. Willie Taggart hired from South Florida. The 'fashionable-fast' register had not been applied to a losing season in the Ducks' modern era, and the program did not know how to calibrate the voice inside the firing.

2016 is the chapter the Helfrich era could not survive. A 4-8 season with a rivalry loss, a defensive collapse, and the first losing-year calibration-question the 'fashionable-fast' register had ever had to absorb. The Willie Taggart hire restarted the scheme identity; the Mario Cristobal promotion (after Taggart's one-year exit to FSU) re-grounded the defensive identity; the Dan Lanning hire in 2022 took both arguments into the Big Ten. None of those decisions happen without 2016. The chapter's legacy inside the program is the specific structural lesson: fashionable-fast requires a defensive floor the 2016 team did not produce, and every Oregon regime since has been graded against whether it could provide one.
