January 18, 2021. Jeremy Pruitt fired for cause following an NCAA investigation that disclosed recruiting violations across multiple years. The firing was a structural shift — Tennessee's third coaching-firing-with-cause of the wilderness era. The athletic-department decision to not pay Pruitt's buyout became a national cause.
January 27, 2021. Josh Heupel hired from UCF. The restoration bet began with a hire that was not the marquee name the fanbase had been asking for — and became, four years later, the restoration chapter the program's identity had been waiting for.

2020 is the chapter that closed the wilderness. A 3-7 SEC-only season was the record; the Pruitt-fired-for-cause aftermath was the structural event. The program's institutional memory placed the chapter alongside the 2009 Kiffin-to-USC year and the 2017 Butch-Jones-firing year as the three post-Fulmer crisis chapters — and 2020 was the one that produced the Heupel hire. The restoration-era-orange register began, structurally, on January 27, 2021. Without the 2020 crisis, there is no 2021 Heupel hire; without the Heupel hire, no 2022 Hooker year, no 2024 CFP.
