November 5, Athens. Georgia 27, Tennessee 13. The loss that kept the Vols out of the SEC Championship Game; Hooker's torn ACL three weeks later at South Carolina closed his college career prematurely.
Orange Bowl, December 30. Tennessee 31, Clemson 14. Joe Milton started; the Heupel offense produced 504 yards without Hooker. The #6 final AP poll finish was the program's highest since 2001 (Fulmer era).

2022 is the chapter where the wilderness ended. An 11-2 season with a Tide win at home, a top-ten finish, and a Heisman-finalist quarterback — the specific combination Tennessee had not assembled since the Fulmer era. Hooker's ACL is the chapter's emotional center; his NFL career was delayed a year, and the program lost its offensive architect for the 2023 bowl cycle. The Heupel scheme, the Spyre Sports NIL infrastructure, and the recruiting calibration that followed all trace to this season. The 1998 title and the 2022 Hooker year are the two reference points the fanbase uses to measure every subsequent regime — and 2022 was the first one of those that had actually happened in a quarter-century.
