Hot seat
See every job →This season
Our hot-seat model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, and his contract (a bigger buyout, relative to pay, makes a change costlier). Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches with 3+ games this season.
Now right where 2025 was at this point.
How his seat has moved, and why
His hot seat, week by week
The chance he’s out by the end of that season, as it stood after every week of his tenure here, by today’s model.
Earlier seasons price the games left with power ratings rebuilt after those seasons ended.
What drives his number
The biggest factors, each against the typical FBS job today.
- ▼ Cooler6-2, outscoring opponents by 105 · AP-ranked
- ▲ HotterYear 7 · tenure, which this model overrates
(why?)
Tenure is one of this model’s strongest inputs, but its weight was set when retirements like Nick Saban’s and Bob Stoops’ still counted as being pushed out, so it overstates how much tenure matters.
- ▼ Cooler18-8 over his previous two seasons here
What happened to coaches like him, 2004–2025
A different comparison: past coaches, not today’s, grouped by one fact at a time. Neither line knows the games he has left or his contract, so they can sit above or below his chance.
- Were 6-2 after 8 games
- 2% pushed out over results · of 389 coaches
- Were in years 5-9, after 8 games
- 14% pushed out over results · of 700 coaches
How good is this number? Checked on every FBS coach from 2010 to 2025, with its percentages calibrated each season on earlier years only: they track what happened — coaches it put near 25% were out about a quarter of the time — and a version pricing the games left with the previous season’s ratings ranked jobs as well as the ranking this page used before. Each week it learns from coaches who were still on the job at that point, so a firing during the season counts. In the Boiling zone it has run a few points high. Every job, and the method.
Poach watch
This winter
Our poach model, on his record so far, the win chances for every game he has left, his program, his pay and his background. Ranked against the 132 FBS head coaches this season. The zone words describe the market’s interest; none of them says he is leaving.
What drives his number
The biggest factors in his profile, each against the typical FBS head coach today. The games he has left are priced into the number, not listed here.
- ▲ HigherAge 43 · neither at his alma mater nor in the state he was born in
- ▼ LowerPaid $9 million in 2025, the 91st percentile of published FBS head-coach pay
- ▼ LowerA Power Four program · 80th percentile of FBS in program stature last season
How good is this number? It ranks a head coach who leaves for another head-coaching job ahead of one who stays 78 to 82% of the time, and its average came within a point of the share who actually left. What it can’t do
Tested on every FBS head coach from 2012 through 2025, each season scored by a model fit only on the seasons before it. From three games on, given one coach who left for a head-coaching job elsewhere or an NFL coordinator job and one who stayed, it ranked the one who left ahead 79 to 82% of the time; in a season’s first two games, 78%. Its average chance came within a point of the share who actually left. It counts a move a coach makes while he still holds the job; when his school ends it, that doesn’t count, even if another school then hires him.
- The live number prices the games he has left with the power model’s ratings from this season. The test priced them with each team’s rating from the season before, because ratings made during past seasons were not kept, so this live version could not be replayed.
- Programs new to FBS have no FBS record before this season in the data it reads, so their coaches are scored without one.
- It is frozen: it learns nothing from 2026 until a deliberate refit.
- A coach hired in December needs his background (age, alma mater, the state he was born in) added before his first game, or he shows as not rated.

I hope this game gets Drinkwitz fired. He’s always been extremely overrated. He’s done nothing to be paid like a top 10 coach and yet he still is. So over his goofy ass
Missouri fan - Sep 3W 54-14 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Simmons has already completed passes that no other Drinkwitz QB was capable of. And I don't mean because he's throwing with the wrong hand.

ATS is his record against the spread: did his team beat the closing betting line, winning by more than it or losing by less? Lines start in 2013; a dash means fewer than 6 of those games had one. One-score games carry no spread record: a big favorite that wins a close game has almost always failed to cover, so that number would say nothing about the coach.

Run/pass mix, by field position

5,123 run and pass snaps at Missouri, 2020–2025, his own games, one row per offensive coordinator. Each cell is how much more often he passed than the rest of FBS did in the same situation (field zone, down, distance, score, quarter, same season), in percentage points.

Roster ownership
Roster ownership
of his 2026 roster arrived on his watch — 113 of 113 players. Nobody is left from before he was hired.
Of his own players on this roster, 31% came through the transfer portal; the rest are non-portal arrivals (high-school signees, JUCO transfers, walk-ons).
This tenure spans the 2021 transfer-portal tracking floor: seasons before 2021 structurally cannot be classified portal-vs-not (they land in 'unknown' below), so the portal-share figure understates how many pre-2021 arrivals might have been transfers under the pre-portal-tracking transfer rules.
29% of his 249 new players since 2022 came through the portal (FBS programs, same seasons: 23%). His share was 24% in 2022 and 45% in 2026.
Graded on the players who arrived and the players who left together, his portal seasons came out better than most FBS programs’ in 1 and worse than most in 1 of the 5 seasons graded. our read
Each player counts once, in the season he arrived. 2021, the first season of portal tracking here, is left off because its arrival records look incomplete (about 31 new players per FBS team, against 52 in 2022). Portal grade: the site’s position-value-weighted scoring (the same engine as the Portal Heat feed and the “Who won the portal” grade): the value of the players who came in minus the value of the ones who left, ranked against every FBS program’s grade that same season. A season with fewer than 4 transfers in and out is not graded.
“His own” means the player arrived while he was head coach; “inherited” means a predecessor brought him in.
Size up front
Size up front
Offensive linemen on his Missouri rosters have averaged 5 lb heavier than the FBS average (2020–2026) — heavier than 76% of FBS coaching runs since 2010. In the three seasons before he arrived, Missouri’s line averaged 9 lb heavier than the FBS average.
Average listed weight of every offensive lineman on each season’s roster, holdovers included, against every FBS roster that season (2010 on; a program needs 3+ seasons under him to appear). Weights are the ones programs publish, and programs list differently. This describes size only — not scheme, and not quality.

A pick counts toward his tenure when the player’s final college season was one he coached, a checkable rule rather than a claim about who developed the player. A blank note means the player is on a verified roster and arrived on his watch. “Estimated” means no roster record, so the final season is assumed to be the year before the draft.

In his own words

In his own words
After consulting with our medical team, Ahmad Hardy will return to practice this week
We’ve always felt he would need two weeks to be back in football practices, and shape — to figure everything out. I really don’t have a timeline
There’s a lot there
Our goal is to make sure he is able to play and protect himself the best he can. That will be our guide
We didn’t stop anything in the first half. We were out of sorts… I think they were six-and-eight on third down
We just didn’t do anything with it offensively, so that’s going to be really disappointing
I mean, the other team’s got really good players, you’re in an elite environment, sold-out crowds, it’s just different
We need to play our best, most complete game to even be in the game
When I think he can’t do any more, he just does more
I just think Austin’s always looking for him
If we wanted to win this game, we had to be a tough team, and tough teams stop the run
(Simmons is) playing extremely confident, knows where to put the ball, has great confidence in his wide receivers
(Roberts) is such a leader for our team
I thought the offense just didn’t settle in. You know, we had the first drive and got stopped on fourth down, obviously, and missed the field goal
Really proud of the guys for going on a 24-0 run, you know, the punt return was huge for us
Obviously we don’t want to have three face masks, but that’s going to happen
We’re one week away from being humble
He played unbelievable, didn’t flinch
Not only was he all over the field making tackles, now he’s making interceptions, getting fumbles
[I was] very disappointed in the third quarter from an overall intensity standpoint… That is a hallmark of what we do not do in our program
I’m not going to give a medical report on it
He’s had plenty of reps
It’s really going to be about guys who can get by acting as one, who can communicate, who can play through the nerves and go out and execute at a high level
I think he’ll be one of the top four or five snap hitters at the wide receiver position
We anticipate that he will make a recovery
I am for expanded opportunities for schools in the playoffs
I am not for giving the committee more opportunities to put people in the playoffs
It’s just being explosive
Throwing those away so you can get a bad matchup between 24 and 18 doesn't make sense to me
Not criticizing the police or the right to bear arms, which is a Second Amendment right
But just saying there is no place for gun violence, especially for our youth in society.
My anticipation of what I’ve seen, the way he’s attacked his rehab: He’s going to be a better Ahmad Hardy than when he was before
Josh had a setback with his injury
He’s [Atkins] still attacking it, but we’ll see how that goes
There’s some internal healing that has to occur before we get to any type of strenuous activities which would then dictate a timeline on his return
I can tell you Ahmad Hardy has been discharged from the hospital. He’s back in (Missouri Orthopedic Institute) and he’s working on a recovery
When you’re dealing with elite athletes, getting back healthy and getting back to elite status is always a little bit tricky in some of these situations
We’re thrilled to add Alex, Chop, John and Garrett to our coaching staff
This place has been nothing but great to me. So I just felt like we weren’t done yet
We were on the wrong end of the flags

Coordinator years
Offensive coordinator across 2 programs, 2 stints, before and after wearing the head-coach hat — every season measured on the same axis, whether he personally ran the unit or someone else did.
How to read this. Coordinator seasons come from our coordinator career records; head-coaching-era seasons are the same unit's FBS-relative percentile for those years, regardless of who coached it, read directly from the staff assignments record. A role change (a “hinge”) is a fact, never a performance verdict — only the season-by-season data itself is colored by outcome.
