Brown

Brown fielded its first team in 1878, and its early rosters read like a founding document for the sport. John Heisman played club football at Brown from 1887 to 1889 before transferring to Penn, years before his Hall of Fame coaching career — and the trophy that carries his name — existed anywhere. Halfback Fritz Pollard became the first Black player named a Walter Camp All-American and led Brown to the first Rose Bowl on January 1, 1916 (a 0-14 loss to Washington State); five years later he became the first Black head coach in NFL history. And from 1946 to 1949, quarterback Joe Paterno played for Brown under coach Rip Engle — when Engle left for Penn State in 1950, Paterno followed him as an assistant, beginning the path to his own Hall of Fame coaching career.

The modern program carries that pedigree inside the realities of Ivy League football: no athletic scholarships, admission built around academics, and — until 2025 — a nearly 80-year, conference-imposed ban on postseason play. Brown has won four Ivy League titles (1976 and 1999 shared, 2005 outright, 2008 shared), but none since 2008. Under head coach James Perry, an alumnus who quarterbacked Brown's 1999 title team and was named Ivy League Player of the Year, the Bears have gone 20-40 since his December 2018 hire, finishing at or near the bottom of the eight-team Ivy League in four of six seasons.

The clearest bright spot of 2025 came off the football field's biggest recent storyline: while Harvard and Yale became the first two Ivy teams ever to reach the FCS playoffs after the conference lifted its postseason ban, Brown's own signature moment was a 28-21 upset of a nationally ranked (No. 8) Rhode Island team on October 3, 2025, forcing four turnovers to reclaim the Governor's Cup after a six-game losing streak in that rivalry — Brown's first win over a ranked opponent since 2009. Brown enters the 2026 offseason still chasing its first Ivy title in nearly two decades.
