Brown fielded its first team in 1878, and its early rosters read like a founding document for the sport. John Heisman played club football at Brown from 1887 to 1889 before transferring to Penn, years before his Hall of Fame coaching career — and the trophy that carries his name — existed anywhere. And from 1946 to 1949, quarterback Joe Paterno played for Brown under coach Rip Engle — when Engle left for Penn State in 1950, Paterno followed him as an assistant, beginning the path to his own Hall of Fame coaching career.

Bruno the Bear

Brown's bear mascot dates to 1902, when a burro was tried and abandoned after it spooked at crowd noise. In 1905 the university brought a live bear named Helen to a game against Dartmouth, and starting in 1921 a succession of live bears -- all named Bruno -- represented Brown at football games until the practice ended around the early 1960s. A bronze Bruno statue, sculpted by Eli Harvey and modeled on a Bronx Zoo bear, has stood on campus since 1927. Today a costumed Bruno carries on the tradition.
