What’s at stake

Abilene Christian

  • Abilene Christian is the West Texas program that turned a decade-long Division I title drought into three conference championships in four seasons — a shared 2022 WAC title in coach Keith Patterson's very first season, the program's first outright UAC championship and first-ever FCS Playoff berth in 2024, and a second straight UAC title in 2025 (this one shared with Tarleton State).

Mercer

  • Mercer is the reinstatement program that shocked the SoCon with back-to-back titles and a perfect 2025 conference record — the bears that went from FCS reinstatement to conference dynasty in a decade.

Face-off

What each fanbase carries into this one.

Mercer

The chip · vs the blue bloods

Fans here believe mercer came out of nowhere in 2024 to win a SoCon championship. Furman has 1988, Wofford has ten playoff runs, the Citadel has tradition. The bears have momentum — and they're using it to prove reinstatement programs can build real dynasties.

What this game touches

The Mike Jacobs resignation. Mercer's legendary coach Mike Jacobs resigned in December 2025 after building the program into a back-to-back SoCon champion and three-time FCS playoff contender. The Jacobs era (20 wins in 2 years) seemed like the foundation of dynasty; his departure leaves the bears without their architect and scrambling to prove the success wasn't dependent on one man.

Abilene Christian

The chip

Abilene Christian was picked sixth in the UAC's own 2024 preseason poll -- other programs in its own conference didn't see the title run coming. The fanbase has since watched the Wildcats beat a ranked Tarleton State team on a late score in back-to-back seasons and knows the doubt was premature.

What this game touches

The pre-2022 Division I title drought. Abilene Christian moved up from Division II in 2013 and spent its first Division I decade (2014-2021) without a single conference championship, playing home games three and a half miles off campus at the city-owned Shotwell Stadium for most of that stretch. The drought ended immediately when Keith Patterson arrived in 2022 and shared the WAC title in his first season.
