Great win for Duke. Nate Sheppard is such a beast!

Nate Sheppard ran for over 1,100 yards and broke Duke's freshman records -- as a true freshman. PFF says he "played like a five-star." The scariest part is that the sophomore year hasn't happened yet.

As a true freshman he carried it 200 times for 1,132 yards at 5.66 a pop, scored 11 times, caught 37 passes, and set Duke's freshman rushing records on his way to Freshman All-America and second-team All-ACC honors. The trait that travels: 63 forced missed tackles, ninth-most in the country, a make-you-miss elusiveness that already grades among the nation's best. PFF ranks him the No. 7 returning running back for 2026. The forward stakes are simply the leap: he's a three-down back with year-one production most players never reach, and the sophomore year is where hyped underclassmen either consolidate or explode. For Sheppard, there's no arrival question left to answer -- only how high the ceiling goes.
His career
He was winning awards before he was old enough to be a story.
Sheppard is an elusive, explosive three-down back, and the freshman tape already grades like a veteran's. Our play-by-play puts his yards-per-carry in the 72nd percentile and his rushing success rate in the 73rd -- efficient and explosive at once -- and the 63 forced missed tackles (ninth nationally) are the make-you-miss element behind it. He's a real receiving threat too (37 catches), which is what makes him a true three-down player rather than a between-the-tackles grinder. The profile is a back who creates yards on his own: a cut, a jump-cut, a missed tackle, and he's gone. At his age, with this production, the development curve is the whole story -- and it's pointing straight up.
