THE LONG WAIT · 2025

The Independent Path

FCS independent programs earn FCS playoff bids through at-large selections without a conference title to win. The independent path is increasingly rare at FCS — most programs have joined conferences for scheduling consistency and automatic-bid access. The programs that remain independent typically have scheduling flexibility that lets them target Power Conference opponents for revenue games while maintaining an FCS playoff profile. It is a difficult needle to thread, and most programs that try it eventually join a conference.

At-large FCS bids are limited and competitive. Can independent programs build the strength-of-schedule resume that earns one of the at-large spots, or does the path to the 32-team bracket run exclusively through conference automatic qualifiers?

Three Things to Watch

The Scheduling Game

Building a Resume Without a Conference

FCS independent programs must schedule their way into the bracket. That means playing conference programs on the road, accepting games where the only reward is a W against a known entity, and building an SOS that the selection committee can compare to the top at-large candidates from the major FCS leagues. A 9-2 independent can miss the bracket while an 8-3 conference program gets in. The independent path demands a near-perfect record and a brutal schedule to even be considered.

The Challenge

Conference Membership Is the Path — This Is the Exception

Most programs that remained independent eventually joined a conference. The handful that remain independent do so for scheduling flexibility — the ability to target FBS opponents for revenue games while maintaining FCS competitiveness. It is a difficult balance to sustain, and it requires a program with enough financial stability to absorb both the upside (FBS paychecks) and the downside (bracket exclusion in a bad year).

Wild Card

Does the 32-Team Bracket Help or Hurt Independents?

The bracket expansion to 32 teams in 2026 added more at-large bids. In theory, that helps independent programs with strong records and schedules. In practice, the committee still prefers conference champions who have proven themselves across a full league schedule. Independent programs benefit from expansion only if their record and schedule are genuinely comparable to the 8th or 9th at-large candidate from a major conference.

Round-robin power = strength of schedule-adjusted conference average, points vs. all-level average team. Record = FCS Independents's record vs. that conference across all games this season.

FCS Independents is a very small affiliation group this season, so its strength is shown with extra regression instead of being treated like a full league ecosystem.
