The architecture of Virginia Tech football is still standing. Lane Stadium, hewn from Hokie Stone, where Metallica's opening riff sends 65,000 fans into a synchronized earthquake — Enter Sandman remains the sport's single most famous entrance ritual, and it belongs to a program built on Frank Beamer's lunch-pail identity: defense, special teams, blue-collar effort. That foundation didn't disappear in the drift years. It just went undeployed.
The drift turned into a rout. Brent Pry's 2025 squad went 0-3 to open the season — the Old Dominion home loss, the worst imaginable image for a program measuring itself against its own proud past — and the university fired him the next day. An interim staff limped to 3-9. What followed was the biggest coaching hire of the offseason: James Franklin, who had just been let go by Penn State after nine seasons and 104 wins, coming to Blacksburg on a full restoration mandate. Franklin's first move was to bring Brent Pry back as his defensive coordinator — a reunion that is either shrewd (Pry's defenses were competent) or loaded with narrative friction. The 2026 quarterback room remains unsettled, the thorniest immediate problem on the roster.
The 2026 season will answer a specific question: is Virginia Tech's brand still a real asset, or just a memory the new coach is spending? Franklin has the recruiting pitch — Lane Stadium, the ACC footprint, the Beamer legacy — and the portal aggression to move fast. Whether that translates to wins in Year One against an ACC schedule that has not softened is the actual test. Through six games in 2026, Virginia Tech is 4-2 under James Franklin, with wins over VMI (73-3), Old Dominion (44-21), at Maryland (35-26) and at Boston College (21-14). It lost 35-33 at Pitt, then on October 10 lost 25-20 at California as an 11.5-point favorite.
