11 seasons inside the CFP era, no bids yet — the era the program is still trying to break into.
Sacramento State's 2014–2025 record is 68-61. The era is still being written; the CFP line is the one the program is arguing for.
Program outlook
Sacramento State built a Big Sky dynasty, watched the coach who built it leave for Stanford, rebuilt, watched that coach leave too — and answered both departures by betting $18 million on the FBS.
Troy Taylor arrived in 2019 and won the Big Sky title in his first season, ending 23 years of conference irrelevance. He won it again in 2021. He won it again in 2022, going back-to-back, finishing 30-8 across those three championship seasons — the first real dynasty in Sacramento State history. Then he left for Stanford that December, the way the good ones do at this level.
Brennan Marion rebuilt the buzz almost immediately — a Go-Go spread offense, a 7-5 season in 2025 — and then left too, one year in, to become Colorado's offensive coordinator under Deion Sanders. Two coaches, two departures, three years. If that were the whole story, Sacramento State would be a cautionary tale about mid-major programs as farm systems for bigger ones.
Instead, it's the setup for the biggest bet the program has ever made. The Hornets tried to go independent — the NCAA said no. They talked to Conference USA — that fell through around Christmas 2025. What they landed on instead was the Mid-American Conference, a football-only membership starting July 1, 2026, backed by a new 25,000-seat stadium and a $57 million NIL collective, the first West Coast program to reach the FBS in a generation. Alonzo Carter, hired that same December, is the third head coach since 2022 and the one tasked with making the number add up.
It costs the Hornets something real: the Causeway Classic, 71 years of playing UC Davis every November for a trophy made of cement, is on hold now that the game isn't a protected date. The 2025 finale — a 31-27 loss on a fourth-down incompletion at the UC Davis 27 — was very possibly the last one for a while. Sacramento State fans have made peace with that trade. The program thinks the Sacramento market, the money, and three Big Sky titles worth of proof are exactly what the FBS hasn't seen from a team this size before. The rest of the sport is watching to see if the math works, with two bowl-ineligible transition years to find out.
A program still writing its FBS identity on the field — the Troy Taylor era was built on discipline and a suffocating defense that turned a 23-year afterthought into a three-time champion; Brennan Marion's brief tenure leaned into an up-tempo Go-Go spread that led the FCS in rushing. What Alonzo Carter installs at the FBS level, against MAC competition the program has never faced, is the identity question 2026 actually answers.

Coaching history
The rituals that anchor a Saturday in this program's world.
since 1954
The Causeway Classic is Sacramento State's defining rivalry -- 71 years of playing UC Davis for a trophy made of cement taken from the Yolo Causeway. UC Davis leads the all-time series 46-19 and has won the last three meetings, including a 31-27 win on November 22, 2025, when the Hornets' final drive died on 4th-and-8 at the UC Davis 27. With Sacramento State moving to the Mid-American Conference for 2026, the annual date is no longer a protected out-of-conference matchup -- likely the last Causeway Classic for years, ending not because either side wanted it to but because Sac State finally leveled up past it.
since 2019
Troy Taylor arrived in 2019 and won the Big Sky title in his very first season, ending 23 years of conference futility. He added two more titles (2021, 2022), going back-to-back, and finished 30-8 (.789) with a 23-1 Big Sky record across those three championship seasons -- FCS Coach of the Year in 2019. He left for the Stanford job in December 2022, the first of two coaches in three years the Hornets would lose to bigger programs.
since 1947
Herky (short for Hercules) the Hornet was chosen as the school's mascot in December 1947 over an Elk, which the committee judged wasn't aggressive enough for an athletics program. The green-gold-and-stinger identity has anchored Sacramento State athletics ever since.
