What’s at stake

Utah Tech

  • Utah Tech is still shaking off a 16-point loss.

Cal Poly

  • Cal Poly is 2 games back in Big Sky with 3 left to make it up.
  • Cal Poly football is a Central Coast program with real history — a 1980 NCAA Division II national championship, three straight Buck Buchanan Award winners (2004-2006, tied with Montana for the most in FCS history), and alumni in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame (John Madden, Bobby Beathard) — now trying to find its footing again. The Mustangs haven't posted a winning season since 2016 and enter 2026 under their third head coach since 2020, Tim Skipper, hired December 2025.

Face-off

What each fanbase carries into this one.

Utah Tech

The chip

Fans here believe utah Tech carries no chip — the program is too young to carry resentment.

What this game touches

The identity crisis of being newly rebranded and organizationally young. Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) changed its name in 2022, became FCS-independent in 2022, joined WAC in 2023, and was mediocre (2–10 in 2025). The program is building from scratch without institutional football heritage or proven winning culture. The wound is not a historical failure — it's the absence of history entirely.

Cal Poly

The chip

There isn't a rival Cal Poly measures itself against out of resentment so much as a quiet frustration with itself -- a program with a Hall of Fame coaching alumnus and a real (if small-division) national title in its history that hasn't found stability on the field in nearly a decade.

What this game touches

The Post-2016 Drought. Cal Poly's last winning season was 2016 (7-5, an FCS playoff berth). Since then the program has cycled through three head coaches in six years -- Beau Baldwin (4-21, 2020-2022), Paul Wulff (10-24, 2023-2025) -- without ever getting back to .500, let alone contending in the Big Sky.

Home field

Cal Poly is worth +6.0 points (±10.1) more at home than on the road since 2018 — top third of FBS, 80th percentile.

33% at home, 17% on the road against FBS opponents (1-2 home, 2-10 away).

Our model gives every stadium the same flat 2.3-point home edge (why); the books use about 3. Against the closing line this stadium reads +0.8 at home vs. away over 46 games — inside the ±8.1 noise, so the flat number is the honest one here.
