THE LONG WAIT · 2025

Wisconsin and Illinois Liberal Arts

The Midwest Conference is the Midwest's most academically distinctive small-college football league — St. Norbert, Lake Forest, Monmouth, Carroll, Grinnell, Knox, Lawrence, Beloit, Illinois College, Ripon, and Cornell College — competing across Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin has appeared in the DIII playoff bracket with a program built on the Green Bay corridor. Grinnell College in Iowa is known for radical innovation in basketball; its football program competes in the same spirit of deliberate unconventionality.

St. Norbert has been the Midwest Conference's most consistent bracket contender. Does Lake Forest or Carroll challenge for the conference title in 2026, or does the Green Bay corridor reassert its dominance?

Three Things to Watch

The StandardSt. Norbert: De Pere's DIII Program

St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin has been the Midwest Conference's most consistently successful bracket program, competing from a campus adjacent to Green Bay in one of America's most football-obsessed cities. The Green Knights recruit from the same Wisconsin and Upper Michigan pipelines as major programs, developing players who chose the Norbertine liberal arts tradition and a DIII football experience in a community where the game matters at every level. When St. Norbert is healthy and running their system, the Midwest Conference bid is theirs to win.

The RivalLake Forest: Chicago's North Shore Program

Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois recruits from the Chicago North Shore — one of the country's wealthiest and most academically productive suburban corridors — competing in the Midwest Conference with a program that draws from families who prioritize both academic excellence and athletic competition. The Foresters' campus on the North Shore gives them access to a recruiting market that Power Four programs target for FBS prospects. When Lake Forest's talent base aligns with their coaching staff, they are the Midwest Conference's most physically talented program outside of St. Norbert.

Wild CardMonmouth: Galesburg and the Prairie Football Tradition

Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois competes in the Midwest Conference from the western Illinois prairie — a football culture distinct from the Chicago suburbs and the Wisconsin corridor that dominate the conference's recruiting landscape. The Fighting Scots draw from the Quad Cities market and downstate Illinois, competing with a physical style that central Illinois's football tradition demands. In a conference year when St. Norbert and Lake Forest are both working through roster transitions, Monmouth is the program most capable of claiming the automatic bracket bid from the middle of the standings.
